Ellen Mandemaker
NL - Het fotografisch werk van Ellen Mandemaker (1968, NL) bevindt zich op de snijlijn tussen abstract en figuratief. Met eenvoudige maar zorgvuldige ensceneringen vertelt ze het verhaal van het object voor haar lens. Haar onderwerpkeuze is vaak alledaags. Ze ziet de schoonheid van een simpel vel papier maar doet bijvoorbeeld ook fotografisch onderzoek naar de aardappel. Ze schikt en herschikt net zo lang tot de kleuren, vormen en opstelling kloppen. Het werk dat Mandemaker voor CODA Paper Art maakte bestaat uit fotoprints waarin kleur en kleurcombinaties centraal staan. Gekleurde vellen papier, in combinatie met helderwit, zijn het uitgangspunt. Zo wil Mandemaker onderzoeken of je tot een eenheid van kleur en vorm kunt komen die uit het papier ontstijgt zonder daarvoor ingewikkelde ingrepen te moeten doen. Voor het werk in CODA Paper Art maakte ze installaties waarbij ze gekleurde vellen papier ophing en vouwde. Vervolgens fotografeerde ze de installaties. Het belangrijkste uitgangspunt was het werkproces zelf, omdat idee en uitvoering daar bij elkaar komen door haar manier van kijken en kadreren. Door te fotograferen zocht ze een manier om weer los te komen van het papier, zodat je als kijker in de eerste plaats vorm en kleur ervaart en pas in tweede instantie ziet dat het papier is.
ENG - In her photographic work, Ellen Mandemaker (b. Netherlands, 1968) explores the interface between abstract and figurative. She uses simple but carefully staged images to tell the stories of the often everyday objects in front of her lens. Mandemaker sees the beauty of a simple sheet of paper, and even a potato, rearranging the compositions until the forms and colours work together. Her work for CODA Paper Art consists of photographic prints centred on colour, and combinations of coloured and brilliant white paper. She explores whether it is possible to achieve a unity of colour and form that transcends the paper without complex intervention, using installations made from folded and suspended sheets of coloured paper. She then photographs these, with the emphasis on the work process itself, because idea and execution are brought together by her manner of looking and framing. Photography is a way of escaping from the material, so that we see the form and colour first, and only then do we realize that it is paper.
