Merijn en Jurriaan Hos
NL - Merijn Hos (1978, NL) is kunstenaar en illustrator en werkt regelmatig samen met zijn broer, Jurriaan Hos (1980, NL), kunstenaar en motion designer. Hun campagnefilm voor festival Down The Rabbit Hole in 2022 was een (online) succes dat genomineerd werd voor de Dutch Design Awards met de woorden ‘Alle designs van Merijn en Jurriaan Hos voor Down The Rabbit Hole stralen een optimisme uit dat je bijna vast kunt pakken’. Deze campagne laat ook zien hoe de broers hun beroepspraktijk als beeldende kunstenaars inzetten voor (PR) campagnes: voor het festival maakten ze kunstwerken van hout, gips, touw en verf om die aansluitend samen te voegen met schetsen, films en texturen in digitale programma’s. Voor Paper Art brengen zij op vellen papier hun band als broers in beeld. Het brengt grafisch werk en fragmenten uit oude 8mm-films uit hun jeugd samen. Als kijker kun je niet direct zien hoe de beelden op het papier tot stand zijn gekomen: met digitale technieken of is het analoog opgenomen? Door het gebruik van verschillende technieken op papier heeft het werk volgens de broers een nostalgische sfeer die past bij de basis: het papieren vel.

Their commercial for the Down The Rabbit Hole music festival in 2022 was an online success. Its nomination for the Dutch Design Awards read: ‘All of Merijn and Jurriaan Hos’s designs for Down The Rabbit Hole radiate an almost tangible optimism.’ The commercial also shows how the brothers use their professional practice as visual artists for public relations and other campaigns. They made the artwork for the commercial from wood, plaster, rope, and paint, and then combined these with sketches, films, and textures in digital programs. In Paper Art, they depict their relationship as brothers on sheets of paper, using graphics and fragments from old eight-millimetre films from their youth. As viewers, we cannot immediately see how the pictures were transferred to the paper, and whether this was done using analogue or digital techniques. But the brothers say this combination of methods gives the piece a nostalgic feel that matches the sheets of paper on which it is created.
