Wessel Verrijt
NL - Wessel Verrijt (1992, NL) bouwt grote sculpturen en levendige karakters die de hoofdrol spelen in zijn performances en films. Zijn installaties bevinden zich op het snijvlak van beeldende kunst, theater en choreografie. Hij beschouwt de sculpturen als ‘entiteiten’ die als kostuums of personages een hoofdrol spelen bij de rituelen die hij creëert als onderdeel van een nieuwe mythologie met een heel eigen symboliek en betekenis. Tijdens de performances van Verrijt zie je zijn entiteiten in een bijzondere choreografie. De sculpturen zijn echter ook autonoom en het materiaalgebruik is kenmerkend voor het uiterlijk van de werken. Verrijt gebruikt bijna alleen gevonden voorwerpen zoals verpakkingsmateriaal, karton of stukken piepschuim. Hij geeft deze materialen een tweede leven waarbij de vorige functie van het materiaal vaak nog zichtbaar blijft. De sculpturen hebben een tijdelijke aard en worden vaak weer hergebruikt, verplaatst of in een nieuwe context getoond. De installatie die te zien is in Paper Art bestaat dan ook uit bestaande elementen en nieuwe sculpturen.

His installations are a blend of visual art, theatre, and choreography, and he describes the sculptures as ‘entities’, acting in the rituals he creates as part of a new mythology with its own meaning and symbolism. While the performances are choreographed, the entities are autonomous, and the choice of materials affects their exterior appearance. Verrijt almost exclusively uses found objects such as cardboard, polystyrene, and other packaging materials, giving them new life while often leaving their previous function visible. The sculptures are temporary, and are often reused, relocated, or shown in a new context, so the installation at Paper Art consists of existing and new elements.
